Native woman second runner-up at Miss America pageant

Elyse Umemoto shares her excitement with her parents after being chosen Miss Washington.

Elyse Umemoto, a member of the Yakama Nation of Washington, placed second runner-up in the Miss America pageant in January.

Umemoto said she was "thrilled" about her finish. She left the competition with $20,000 in scholarship money.

In addition to being Yakama, Umemoto is German, Hispanic and Japanese. Her platform as Miss Washington is "Embracing Diversity, Empowering Women."

Umemoto grew up in Wapato, on the Yakama Reservation. She is a student at Pacific Lutheran University and plans to attend law school.
